ESTIMATING UNCERTAINTY FOR NORMALLY DISTRIBUTED DATA

Measurement uncertainty associated with random error is estimated for data from a normally distributedpopulation. The multiplier associated with this estimate is calculated using confidence intervals forpopulation statistics. Simulations for a 95% confidence level give a similar value for this multiplier. Amethod is suggested for displaying uncertain values with an appropriate number of significant digits.
