The case of an earth dam subjected to earthquake excitation is used in order to assess the range ofvalidity and application of analytical closed-form solutions developed in the literature for the seismicresponse of earth and rockfill dams. The dam-layer system is modelled as an Auto-Regressive,(ARX), and Auto-Regressive, Moving Average (ARMAX) model with auxiliary input. The dynamicparameters of the system (modal frequencies, damping values) are extracted from the strongmotion recordings using a 'parallel-form realization' structure of the transfer function of the dynamicsystem. During the identification process, adaptive techniques are used in order to accountfor the non-stationarity of the strong motion and detect the changing dynamic parameters of thesystem during the earthquake. The dynamic properties obtained from the adaptive system identificationprocedure are compared with the properties obtained from the analytical solutions and thevalidity and accuracy of the latter is assessed.
