A GUIDE FOR REPAIR, STRENGTHENING AND NEWBUILD OF LOW-RISE DOMESTIC BUILDINGSDAMAGED BY THE 26 JAN 2001 EARTHQUAKE INGUJARAT, INDIA

On the 26 January 2001 a major earthquake (7.7Mw) struck the region of Kutch, in thenorth-western state of Gujarat, India. It caused widespread devastation and according tothe Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) more than a million houseswere damaged and many completely destroyed. Five major towns of Kutch (pop 1.2M)were in ruins and up to 7600 villages were badly affected with 450 villages completelyflattened. Present death toll stands at 17,143, and about 167,000 people have been injured.Damage and reconstruction estimates range $5 to $8 billion dollars.Immediately following the earthquake there was a desperate need by owner builders forguidelines and assistance in the repairing and strengthening of domestic buildings up to 3storey's in height. The authors, decided to help by producing a 90 page booklet or Guidewhich give seismic resistance measures for the repair and strengthening of the three mostcommon types of buildings most affected by the earthquake (rubble stone, cut-stonemasonry and reinforced concrete buildings). Many of the recommendations made can alsoapply to new build. This paper describes this booklet which is being distributed free toGujarat and is being applied in many local villages. The paper also describes theworkshops and training programmes, which have been carried out in Kutch following thedistribution of the Guide.
