EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE ANALYSIS OF CONCRETEGRAVITY DAMS

The seismic safety of the existing dams has been a subject of both practical and academicinterests in the UK. This paper uses a rigorous software EAGD-SLIDE to evaluate theearthquake responses of gravity dams owned by Scottish and Southern Energy. It isdemonstrated that EAGD-SLIDE is capable of modelling the stick-slide behaviour of theNewmark sliding block. Further more, EAGD-SLIDE results have been used to validate thepublished approximate equation for the natural frequencies of gravity dams. Seismicresponses of two representative dam sections are presented.
