Healing Behavior of a Carbon/Mendomer Composite

Mendomers are polymers which can be healed by heating via Diels-Alder (DA) and retro-Diels-Alder (rDA) reactions. Therefore, they can be used as a matrix resin for thermally mendable composites. The curing kinetics of mendomer 401 was investigated using a conventional cure model of thermosetting polymers with dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) result. A composite panel with two layers of carbon fabric and mendomer 401 was fabricated with the suggested cure cycle using autoclave molding method. Micro-indentation tests were performed to investigate mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was conducted to study thermal behavior and to find the trigger temperature for healing behavior. Finally, self-healing behavior of the graphite/mendomer composite was investigated using electrical resistive heating over the glass transition temperature.
