Performance Investigation of pVdF Polymer Based Electrolyte in Lithium Ion Cells

Testing of pVdF based polymer electrolyte Li-ion cells showed good performance at -20°C by obtaining 44.77% of room temperature capacity. At -30°C capacities were limited and exhibited only 1.43% of room temperature capacity. Operation at elevated temperatures was not a problem. Temperature tests yielded 87.35% and 78.61% capacities at 40°C and 50°C respectively, as compared to room temperature capacities.Rate tests were performed at 600 mA and 900 mA discharge rates and yielded 93.5% and 85.17% capacity as compared to baseline capacities.During the 7-day storage test a 29.70% permanent capacity loss was shown, with the temporary loss at 34.49%.Life cycle testing of the cells showed promising results by obtaining a capacity in excess of 82% after 150 cycles.The Maxpower polymer cells studied in this effort show promising results in high and low temperature operation, rate capability, storage, and cycle life for use by the US Army. Overall, the evolution of polymer technology has been successful and will continue to be an area of development by the US Army.
