POST-LIQUEFACTION RESPONSE OF LIQUEFIABLE SOILS

This paper deals with the assessment of the post-liquefaction stress-strain behavior of completely or partially liquefied sand and its associated residual strength based on drained test behavior. At present, there is no particular procedure that allows the assessment of the post-cyclic behavior, termed "post-liquefaction" behavior herein, of liquefied or "partially liquefied" (I.e. Softened or liquefying) sand. The prediction of the undrained post-liquefaction response of partially or completely liquefied sands presented here is based on basic properties of sand such as its relative density [or (N_1)_(60) blowcount], the effective angle of internal friction (Φ), the roundness of the sand grains (ρ), the uniformity coefficient (C_u) and the drained axial strain at 50% stress level (ε_(50)). The technique developed by Norris et al. (1997) and Ashour and Norris (1999) has been extended in this paper to predict the varying post-liquefaction response of sand after being partially or completely liquefied by cyclic loading. The technique presented accounts for the excess porewater pressure induced by cyclic loading (Δu_c) and the post-cyclic excess porewater pressure generated under monotonic loading (Δu_c). The findings presented in this paper will help in the study of the lateral spread of liquefied soil and the construction of the p-y curves associated with laterally loaded piles in liquefiable soils.
