摘要

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake of January 26, 2001 that struck at 8:46 AM near Bhuj in the state of Gujarat, India resulted in approximately 20,000 deaths, 300, 000 dwellings destroyed and several billion dollars in damage. While the damage to buildings and bridges, due largely to inadequate design for seismic forces coupled with deficiencies in construction practices and materials, did not offer any new lessons, there are a considerable number of geotechnical related failures that will significantly enhance the profession's database. The author along with B. Khaleghi and L.F. Harder was part of a third PEER group of EERI/NSF post earthquake investigators (see Table 1) to visit the region. Although the immediate assignment of the author was to gather additional data relative to port facilities, this paper is a summary of some of the geotechnical aspects investigated by the whole team.
