Electronic marketplaces are perceived to create tremendous values to both buyers and sellers along two dimensions: aggregation and collaboration. This paper focuses on the attractiveness of electronic marketplaces from the buyer perspective with proposed classification of purchased products as non-critical, leverage, bottleneck, and strategic items. The developed portfolio of electronic marketplaces offers a framework for mapping out the appropriateness of each type of electronic marketplaces (third party exchanges - 3PXs, industrial sponsored markets - ISMs, and private trading networks - PTNs) to different purchasing situations.
