Latest research suggests that, instead of outsourcing functions or activities (= tasks within a functional area) one by one, they should be outsourced in clusters if they are connected through flows of goods or information. We test this theory using case studies and survey data. We find only weak support for outsourcing multiple functions simultaneously and strong support for outsourcing clusters of activities. We discuss the implications of these findings and ideas for further research.
