The 910m wide Kotri Barrage on the River Indus was constructed in 1955. In 1989, a feasibility study concluded that the 44 barrage gates had experienced serious loss of metal and recommended their replacement. Kotri barrage had been constructed without the means to isolate individual sluiceways. A concept was selected for sluiceway isolation comprising a floating bulkhead gate, to be upended, ballasted and positioned between the barrage piers. This paper describes the successful development of the bulkhead gate and associated equipment, and its operation in the replacement of the gates of the Kotri barrage.
