The potential increase in cell-efficiency, the reduction of the module-assembly cost, and the improvement from esthetical point of view explain the presence of motivations to introduce the backcontacted solar cell concept in a lower cost production-environment. One of the key issues within this frame is that of the junction separation between the emitter and base contacts, which are now present within the same plane. This explains the need for new junction separation techniques that are low cost, high throughput, high yield and selective. This paper describes pre- as well as post-diffusion selective approaches as integrated into an existing low cost screenprinted metallisation processing scheme.
