In the actual market all subjects connected to the life of the company must contribute to the satisfaction of targets and can be objects of optimisation policies. In this perspective the maintenance system is a great instrument of competitive advantage for the quality of product and its correspondent costs. In the last years several different strategies were introduced, for example Total Productive Maintenance and Reliability Centred Maintenance, with systemic and organic approaches that exceed the simple corrective philosophy. Now recent progressions in technology of sensors field and in telecommunications, internet, LAN, can supply very powerful instruments for the remote control, diagnosis and intervention of plants. In a single word, telemaintenance. This paper deals with the tools of these techniques, and traces their fundamental advantages and actual criticalities. Three real industrial cases, with very different features, are discussed in order to demonstrate the wide spectrum of application and the great impact of telemaintenance. Remote maintenance is interesting for manufacturers and services suppliers and can be an exploitable resource for service industries.
