The role of σ-bond bridges between aromatic moieties in coal and coal relatedproducts during pyrolysis was investigated. Several model compounds, includingbiphenyl, 1,1’-bi-2-naphthol, and bianthrone, were studied using a flash pyrolysisGC/MS. These model compounds contain one to three ring aromatic units bond togetherwith a σ-bond bridge. The rupture of the σ-bond was followed as a function of thetemperature. It was found that the bond breaking was easier facilitated with increasingring-size of the aromatic moieties. The σ-bond bridge breakage of the model compoundswas compared to that of a hvA bituminous coal and a coal tar pitch.
