It is said that the high inertinite content coal, compared with the low inertinite content coal, brings higher residueyield and less oil yield. One of the approaches to increase the amount of coal liquefaction oil in liquefying thehigh inertinite content coal is to treat its liquefaction residue effectively. Recycle of the asphaltene extracted fromthe residue to the liquefaction reaction seems to be an effective measure. In the NEDOL process, heavy productsare recycled as solvent, and remaining light products are withdrawn as products. Since possibility of the use of theextracted asphaltene as the recycle solvent was indicated, heavier fractions used as the recycle solvent could bewithdrawn as part of product oil. Therefore, improvement of the coal liquefaction oil yield was expected in theNEDOL process. Moreover, it was found that in the coal liquefaction tests at the 0.01t/d flow type bench scale unit, enrichingproton donor quality on recycle solvent and increasing the residence time were effective to decompose theasphaltene. As the results, by adding an asphaltene to solvent and decomposing an asphaltene at a coalliquefaction process, possibility of about 69 wt% oil yield was achieved, even in the coal liquefaction of the highinertinite content coal.
