A study is presented on different synthetic routes to prepare layered double hydroxides (LDHs) containing organic sulfonates hosted in the interlayer space. The solids prepared have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and thermal methods. Anionic exchange and precipitation in the presence of NaOH have been used, but urea hydrolysis represents the best route to obtain crystalline solids, with low specific surface area, although coprecipitation of amorphous Al(Ⅲ) oxohydroxides is only avoided when a large excess of urea is used.
