Between 1997 and 2000 in cooperation of the National Park Authority of Berchtesgaden, the Bavarian Geological Survey and LAMA (Laboratory of Alpine Mountains, Grenoble; now: Gap), several groundwater tracer experiments were carried out in the Northern part of the "Steinernes Meer" and in the valley "Endstal" (Southwest of Berchtesgaden) using the tracers uranine, eosine and amidorhodamine. The investigations in the "Steinernes Meer" area showed flow patterns in the karst, especially hydraulic connections of the waters in the cave "Salzgrabenhohle", underground drainage of the cirque lakes "Funtensee", "Gruen-see" and "Schwarzensee" and the catchment of the "Koenigssee". In the valley "Endstal" the tracer experiments could clarify the hydraulic contact of the porous unconsolidated layers and the karst aquifer.
