Gravois Bluffs: Review of a Successful Large-Scale Blast-Monitoring program

Public relations, regulatory compliance, determination and implementation of pre-blast inspections, and accurate blast monitoring data are all essential components when conducting blasting operations for a large scale, high profile, urban site development. By working closely with the contractor, an independent vibration consulting firm can provide the commitment of time, energy and resources to tie all of these elements together. when this comprehensive approach is properly implemented, problems often associated with projects of this magnitude can be almost completely eliminated. Bloomsdale Excavating Company, Inc., of Bloomsdale Missouri used this approach to handle the responsibilities of their blasting operations at the Gravois Bluffs commercial site development in Fenton, Missouri. The Gravois Bluffs project is one of the largest single commercial mass excavations to date in the state of Missouri. From a public relations and safety standpoint, the method in which this contractor conducted blasting and monitoring should be used as a gold standard for large scale, high profile urban projects. Following this method, along with thorough pre-blast inspections, proved to be extremely effective in eliminating false claims of damage in a cost-effective manner. This review will outline the methods used to handle blast-monitoring operations at the Gravois Bluffs commercial site development in Fenton, Missouri and contrast with other projects where less effective methods were used.
