The installation of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) processes on many utility powerplants has significantly increased the need for a safe, reliable alternative to anhydrousammonia to provide the reagent to the SCR catalyst. Until recently, the only availablechoices for providing ammonia were anhydrous ammonia or solutions of ammonia inwater. Both of these reagents are dangerous to ship, store and handle, and there has beenan effort to develop a safer alternative. In 2000, the first commercial Ammonia OnDemand (AOD) process for producing ammonia on-site from urea was successfullyoperated at the Canal Station of Mirant in Massachusetts. The operating results of thatfirst season have been reported previously.
