We propose a new approach to converting design feature model to machining feature model. In the approach, the machining feature model of a part is generated automatically and incrementally as the design feature model of the part is set up by feature-based design method. Specifically, the machining feature model is generated by performing local feature recognition on the certain area of the part's boundary representation. We determine the area needing to be recognized by geometric reasoning according to both the current design feature model and the previous machining feature model. To effectively support the geometric reasoning, a dynamic link list is devised and used to record how the topological elements are changed during the design process and the relationship between the design feature model and machining feature model. The proposed approach can realize seamless integration between design and manufacturability evaluation and support design for manufacturing and concurrent engineering.
