The design of multi-disk chopper time-of-floight (MTOF) spectrometers for high-resolution quasielastic and low-energy inelastic neutron scattering at spallation sources is discussed in some detail. A continuously variable energy resolution (1 mu eV to 10 meV), and a large dynamic range (1 mu eV to 10 meV), are outstanding features of this type of instrument, which are easily achieved also at a pulsed source using state-of-the-art technology.
