Experiments were conducted to obtain fundamental data on local shear failure of reinforced concrete plane members with or without shear reinforcement. The specimens used in the experiments were two pairs of facing edges simply supported in one direction and free in the other direction. The span length 7 and the width B of all specimens were 60 cm and 100 cm, respectively. The principal reinforcement and reinforcement normal to the principal reinforcement were arranged with spaces of 5 cm between them, and the effective depth was 13.5 cm. A load was applied at the mid-line of the span length and distance e from the free edge to the load changed. Some specimens had shear reinforcement in the vertical direction. The configuration of shear reinforcement was □-shaped. It was found that the stiffening effect of shear reinforcement can not be very much expected in the load applying at the free edge vicinity. However, in the case of the remotely applied load from free edge, the increment in shear capacity according to the arrangement of shear reinforcement was observed.
