Many hydraulic structures are subject to severe wear. To protect or repair such structures, a protective layer may be applied. Calcium aluminate cement based concrete is well suited for such applications because of its high resistance to wear. At least five different mechanisms can be distinguished which induce concrete wear in hydraulic structures: abrasion, erosion, cavitation, impact and soft water. These mechanisms are explained and related tests methods are summarized. Tests results are reported showing that calcium aluminates based concrete resistance to wear is better than high strength Portland cement based concrete. This is explained by the combined effect of a hard synthetic aggregate and very good paste-aggregate bonding due to their similar nature.
