Adhesively bonded joint design requires more information of the adhesive mechanical properties than is found in the standard materials data sheet (MDS) for a particularly adhesive that is provided by the adhesive vendor. One approach to adhesively bonded joint design uses the shear strain energy of the adhesive. This analysis allows calculation of the peak shear stresses and strains in the bonded joint (assuming a non-linear distribution of shear strain along the overlap length). This will then determine the adhesive load carrying capacity. However, calculation of the shear strain energy (or the area under the shear stress/strain curve) is difficult due to the visco-elastic shear behaviour of adhesives. Several analysis methods have been developed to estimate the visco-elastic behaviour. This paper presents a relatively quick method of estimating the elastic-plastic adhesive shear stress/strain parameters from actual shear stress/strain curve data. The level of accuracy is shown to be excellent for preliminary design of adhesively bonded joints.
