Advantages and disadvantages of discrete (particle) models applied in numerical simulations of porous mateiral penetrated by liquid metal in foundry process are discussed. Emphasis is put on the usage of Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method and the basics of this technique is presented. 2-D flow model is analyzed for different porous material densities. Preliminary results of the 3-D DPD simulations of the infiltration process are also shown. The results are qualitatively confronted with experiment.
