THE ROLE OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN WESTERN BUSINESS SCHOOLS, AND THE ROLE OF WESTERN BUSINESS SCHOOLS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES PARTICIPANTS

At a time when the world is closer than ever before to establishing a global trade regime, and where continuous technological advances have made what was once "unthinkable" now common-place, the disparities between rich and poor, developed and developing, North and South, are possibly greater than ever. Increasingly, we hear calls for new approaches in providing assistance to those countries that are considered the developing world, and increasingly the efforts that are forthcoming fail to break the patterns of failure and dependency. Modern management and markets are often cited among the factors that are needed to accelerate development, and to ensure its sustainability, but the plight of the developed world appears not to get very much attention in the leading business schools of the West, while efforts to build "home-grown" approaches to management and markets are often characterized as "too little-too late." This panel will discuss the role of Western business school expertise in confronting the problems of the developing world, and the role of the developing world in the curricula of Western business schools. The panel will include members who have led business schools in the developing world; those who are employing business-school talent in the developing world; those who are funding institutional development in the developing world; and those who are searching for new approaches for using business school expertise to rethink development issues.The purpose of this panel is to explore the issues above and to discuss examples where developing country issues are being addressed using business school expertise to address issues of development. The panel will also consider opportunities for further activity, as well as teaching materials that are available to bring developing country issues into the Western business school's curricula.
