The purpose of this research is to go beyond the current and previous research in the area of manufacturing processes and supply chains. Substantial research has been done in the formulation of product flexibility, process flexibility, volume flexibility, and supply chain management. However, the relationship between manufacturing processes and supply chain management has not been clearly established. More specifically, are firms producing products that will fit manufacturing processes to their supply chains, or are the firms' suppliers playing key role in determining the firms' manufacturing processes? How does this order in designing processes and supply chains affect manufacturing performance? This and other research questions will be addressed when studying the relationship between manufacturing processes and supply chains
