Evaluation of emergency department (ED) management performance has been the subject of limited research. The objectives of this multiple case study were to evaluate and comparatively analyze ED management performance within four academic medical center EDs and to use this comparative analysis to develop a prospective measurement tool to evaluate ED management and leadership performance. This tool, the AMLS (Assessment of Medical Management/leadership) tool, is a conceptual framework to evaluate management performance at the macroscopic level of the emergency department and is intended for use in evaluating any ED's management performance. This proposed tool will require further research application to determine its reliability and validity.
