INTRODUCING VISIBLE ADVANTAGE AND DB2 UNIVERSAL DATABASE INTO A GRADUATE BUSINESS CURRICULUM: PITFALLS AND SUCCESSES

Data warehousing, data mining, and customer relationship management all require significant quantities of properly structured and manipulated data. Industrial-strength software products (e.g., the database management systems from Oracle, Informix, and IBM, among others) are often used in the "real world" to manage such data. Largely because of academic calendars and available resources, university students rarely have the opportunity to work with such software products in a meaningful way. This paper discusses several problems encountered and overcome in the process of introducing students to the software products used for modeling business requirements, creating a physical database, populating it, and allowing access to it.
