SECURITY CONCERNS IN 3G NETWORKS

This paper analyses the proposals for implementing security mechanisms within Third Generation networks (3G). The infrastructure under 3G mobile networks moves towards IP communications. Thus, a reliable mechanism for providing secure transactions among users and network elements is required. Using existing protocols and proposed solutions according to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) requirements, different approaches are described. The Federal PKI Steering Committee (FPKISC) sets the guidelines to enable a global Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). Therefore, the UMTS architecture will need to be compliant with a public PKI in a short term.
