This paper investigates the potentiality of Java in the design and implementation of MFTP, a transport protocol providing reliable multicast transfer of files from one sender to multiple receivers throughout the Internet. We present a Java implementation of the MFTP protocol, describe the software architecture and propose an experimental setting to test its performance and robustness on different platforms and in presence of a variable number of clients. Experimental results show that our Java implementation of MFTP performs well up to high transmission rates and it is robust with respect to packet loss.
