The special features of a multimedia system, such as maintaining temporal-spatial relations, referential integrity, data composing and sharing, data query and security, etc., raise special requirements in multimedia database design and management. This research presents a logical object concept and a hierarchical (multi-layer) object model to address these problems. All the data in a multimedia database are treated as objects. The logical object concept helps maintain logical and temporal relations among objects and enhance referential integrity. The hierarchical object model helps compose and present multimedia documents according to users' requirements. Security and access control can also be resolved easily in this hierarchical model.
