Multimedia is described to offer a variety of new possibilities in learning. However, the description of learner behavior during simultaneous integration of several types of information (text, sound, fixed or moving images) is not good enough. What are the effects of these combinations on learning and what are the criteria necessary for combining them effectively? Following studies in cognitive psychology, our research aimed to define the effect of different multimedia presentation modes on learning foreign language vocabulary. A statistically significant influence was observed in the memorization of words suggesting better integration in co-reference of the different sources. Beyond these experimental results, some principles for the design of multimodal learning tools are discussed.
