Two large fatal landslides at Fei Tsui Road and Shum Wan Road which occurred in August 1995, were influenced by localised concentrations of low strength, clay-rich zones within the weathered rock mass (Kirk et al. 1997). A number of complementary studies were carried out by the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) to establish means to identify other locations where these zones might occur and to determine their engineering significance with respect to the stability of slopes. The paper describes these studies, illustrates the data obtained and concludes with a summary of the main findings and their importance to slope stability studies.
