A geogrid reinforced soil slope located at the entrance road connecting National Chi-Nan University and Puli, failed during the Chi-Chi earthquake. This case attracts a lot of attention on the stability of high reinforced slopes. Some methods and criteria are available for the design of a slope reinforced by geogrid but these are based on the study of retaining walls, and not on the study of high slopes. The theme of this paper is to study the effect of geogrid on reinforcing high slopes to enhance the understanding of this reinforcing mechanism. In the field case presented, a series of parametric analyses are performed. The slope stability is evaluated using the FLAC program to assess the stability under static and dynamic loadings. The critical zones for all the analyses are compared. Based on the analysis results, some suggestions regarding the design of geogrid on reinforcing high slopes are made.
