The bender element method has been widely used to determine the maximum shear modulus, G_(max), of soils at strain level of about 0.001 % and below. The objective of this paper is to present an investigation on measurement of G_(max) of residual soils in Singapore using the bender element method. Undisturbed and reconstituted samples of residual soils derived from Jurong sedimentary formation were used in the study. For undisturbed samples, comparison of G_(max) determined using bender element method and in-situ geophysical survey using surface waves is made. Compacted samples of three different types of residual soils were used to investigate the relationship of G_(max) with water content and void ratio.
