Present condition of mercury emission in Korea was investigated. The government will regulateemission of vapor phase mercury from 2005. The regulation will be applied first to incineratorsrather than to power plants. To develop activated carbon (AC) to be used in AC injection system, the performance of virgin AC with that of sulfur impregnated AC was compared. Virgin AC withincreased oxygen functional groups was superior in mercury adsorption performance. Theadsorption performance of sulfur impregnated AC depended on the pore characteristics of virginAC used as raw material and the types of sulfur, rather than on the amount of sulfur impregnated.Method of reactive sulfur impregnation has been developed. With the method, the utilizationefficiency of sulfur to mercury adsorption was maximized. It was inferred that the result might beapplied effectively to the AC injection system of incinerators or power plants.
