Development of sulfur removal processes from coal prior to combustion may play animportant role in use of high sulfur coals. Pyrolysis transforms a portion of the solid coal intogas and liquid products, and may be possible to generate low sulfur chars for cleancombustion in ordinary boilers. This paper presents recent results on the influence of gaseousadditive on sulfur removal from four coals. Pyrolysis experiments were conducted in a fixedbedreactor at a heating rate of 10°C/s to 700°C. Some organic reagents (methanol, ethanoland acetone) as gaseous additives were added to nitrogen stream. It was observed that theintroduction of the organic reagents in pyrolysis promotes sulfur removal, which results inobvious decrease in sulfur content of char. Under the conditions studied, the addition ofethanol is most effective for desulfurization of the coals.
