EVALUATION OF SUGARCANE VARIETIES FOR AGROCLIMATIC CONDITIONS OF TARAI BELT IN U.P

A large No. of sugarcane varieties have been evoled and released under Early, Mid and Mid Late maturing groups but the behaviour of these varieties in the field have not been found to be favourable. Therefore JBIAAR promoted by the BHL evaluated 12 sugarcane varieties, Including six under early and six under Mid-Late groups. Out of the six varieties under early group only one sugarcane variety viz. Co.S. 96258 was found to meet all the norms as fixed by the Core Group Committee of the State Govt. Similarly under Mid group, where six varieties were evaluated only three sugarcane varieties i.e. Co.S'. 91248, Co.Se. 92423 and Co.Se. 96436 were found to meet the desired norms of the productivity as well as Pol% cane. However the early variety CO.LK. 91236 though found to meet the norms of Pol% cane but lagged behind in respect of other agronomical charactors. Besides this the data of incidence of sugarcane Top borer and Stalk borer also recorded in which variety CO.S. 96258 is found to be moderately affected by stalk borer but this variety can be managed well by the adoption of Integrated Pest Management Including Biological Control.
