In late 1998, Enron installed two Z-750 turbines in Springview, Nebraska, as part of the DOEEPRITurbine Verification Program. During a lightning storm in July 1999, the turbinessustained lightning damage, including destruction of a blade. Following the damage, a series ofturbine electrical wiring modifications were made to the units. The wiring modifications weredeveloped with support from the TVP program. In June 2000, Enron installed the LightningGuard I retrofit, which included conductors in the blades. The summer of 2000 was a severesummer for lightning activity in the Springview area; however, the turbines experienced onlyminor damage. This paper presents a review of the lightning risk, a summary of lightning damage sustained in1999 compared to 2000, and a description of the wiring modifications and Lightning Guard Iretrofit installed at the site. NPPD presents a utility’s perspective on the effectiveness oflightning protection in the Midwest.
