A membrane fuel cell stack with 100 cells was developed for electric vehicle applications using bipolar plates with an active area of 200 cm~2 and an internal water cooling system (Fig. 1). As electrochemical components, Nafion membranes from DuPont (USA) and electrodes from E-Tek (USA) were used. The pitch of a repetitive unit was 3.25 mm. The performance of this 100-cell stack was characterized by current/voltage and current/power curves such as those shown in Fig. 2. The stack delivered a power up to 6.5 kW at a stack temperature of 70°C with gas pressures of 2 bar and well humidified feed gases. The average cell voltage was 625 mV and the current 102 A. We also tested some radiation-crafted membranes prepared at PSI in single cells and in a five-cell stack to see if these potentially cheap membranes could replace the Nafion membrane in fuel cells.
