We control the chaotic oscillations of a non-autonomous, nonlinear system using optimal control strategies. The system under investigation, which is relevant to the oscillations of an excited flexible beam, is at the 1:2 resonance. We use the step-wise linearization method of Pourtakdoust, Jalali & Saberian and attempt to transfer the state of system from the chaotic region of the phase space into regular one with the aim of tracking the stable periodic solutions whose amplitude and frequencies are specified. This "residual" periodic orbit can then be filtered by classical techniques.
