This paper discusses the behavior of the reaction between inclusions and Al and REM in molten steel in controlling inclusions to a harmless composition in Si-Mn killed steel cord. Changes in the Al_2O_3 and REM oxide concentrations of inclusions can be predicted from the trace amounts of Al and REM in Si-Mn killed molten steel. An increase in the Al_2O_3 and/or REM oxide concentration from less than 5 mass% to more than 10 mass% improved the deformability of manganese-silicate inclusions during hot rolling.
