The paper presents a low-head hydraulic turbine conceived especially to reduce fishinjury. The number of components harmful to the fish was reduced to a minimum. Thiswas achieved by eliminating stay vanes and wicket gates, designing a Minimum GapRunner with large blade passages and low pressure variation as well as by the use of astraight draft tube, discharging water very close to the water surface. Moreover, theturbine designers also considered ways to reduce indirect sources of fish mortality, dueto perdition, an important factor in overall turbine passage survival.In the paper, various aspects of the design are discussed, focusing especially on issuesrelated to fish injury.The primary use of this turbine will be in diverting water from spillways. The turbineused there would assure fish survival comparable with spillways, but without negativeeffect of water supersaturation.
