A Consortium consisted of U.S. Electric Power Research Institute, Alberta Research Council, U.S. and Canadian Federal Governments, the University of Alberta, Canadian private sector and others developed, during 1986-1998, the Clean Soil Process~R (CSP), technology for contaminated soil cleanup. The CSP is advanced soil washing that utilizes carbonaceous materials such as coal, coke etc. as adsorbents to remove organic contaminants from remedied soil. The processing is carried out in a liquid phase, at temperatures up to 90°C and under intense agitation conditions to accelerate mass transfer and process kinetics. Clean soil and coal with adsorbed hydrocarbons are separated either by gravity separation or flotation. The technology is capable of cleaning soils contaminated with crude and heavy oils, petroleum- and coal-derived tars and other petrochemicals. The CSP technology was demonstrated in a commercial scale of 12 t/h for cleanup of oily sand generated by heavy oil industry in Alberta, Canada. Thermo Design Engineering Ltd. of Edmonton, the company, that commercialized the technology, operates the CSP plant and is negotiating with heavy oil producers the construction of other similar plants. The first commercial CSP plant operating at Elk Point, Alberta meets Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment and Alberta Tier 1 criteria for soil cleanup. This paper is outlining the history of CSP process development and its scale-up to a commercial size plant.
