An Alberta Research Council (ARC) consortium has established a pilot site at Fenn-Big Valley, Alberta, Canada. The project is designed to enhance coalbed methane (CBM) production while storing CO_2 in coal reservoirs. The project consists of the following phases: 1) Proof of concept, which has shown that two times as much CO-2 can be injected as CH_4 produced from a coal seam. 2) micro-pilot huff and puff tests using CO-2 and N_2 as injectants 3) Simulation of the full field pilot. 4) Technical demonstration of the full field pilot Variable CO_2-N_2 mixtures are needed for injection into CBM deposits. Options for producing continuously compositionally variable CO_2-N_2 streams are discussed.
