A New Method to Provide Quality of Service Support to TCP/IP Applications

Providing Quality of Service (QoS) support to TCP/IP application is needed urgently for multimedia Internet. Based on Agent Mechanism, this paper proposes a QoS Proxy Scheme by providing a network architecture which could offer QoS support and typical for nowadays Intranet, giving the description of the method used in this scheme to identify flow and accommodate the identified flow by an appropriate ATM connection. It also gives the description of the structure of the QoS Proxy Server and its algorithm for bandwidth allocation. This scheme is accomplished by a specially designed ATM edge device called QoS Proxy Server, and this server behaves as an Intelligent Agent which could work independently by its own knowledge library without the need for signaling from hosts it serves, thus the legendary applications and hosts could keep intact.
