This paper reports a system and methodology that quantitatively characterizes the pre-mixing phase of a fule-coolant interaction (FCI) by using combinations of dual energy X-ray imaging and high-speed cinematography. Identification and quantification of spatial and temporal characteristics of the three FCI phases (fuel (molten metal), coolant (water), and vapor (voids - entrapped air and generated steam)) were recorded. The high-spped cinematography imaging subsystem and the lowenergy X-ray imaging subsystem provided visual photographs and distinguished steam voids from water. The high-energy X-ray imaging subsystem provided additional discernment of metal from water and vapor.
