The use of overhead traveling bridge cranes in nuclear, aerospace and other industries in safety critical applications is common practice. To achieve enhanced safety in these applications, mechanical systems have been augmented with a variety of devices to assure that a mechanical component failure could not cause a catastrophic loss of the load carrying capability. Electrical control systems also are equipped with similar protective features. ASME NOG-1-1998, (Rules for Construction of Overhead and Gantry Cranes, Top Running Bridge, and Multiple Girder) provides design standards for cranes in safety critical areas.
