NRC and the nuclear industry differ in the interpretation of regulatory guidance for fire-induced circuit failures. With agreement from the NRC, NEI is developing a risk-informed method for resolving these differences. This will permit plants and NRC TO FOCUS corrective actions on those failures that are safety significant. The industry method integrates deterministic circuit analysis guidance (developed by the BWR Owners Group) with fire frequencies and circuit failure characterization criteria developed by EPRI and NEI. The NRC is reviewing this method. Further development of this method, along with testing of cable failure modes and pilot evaluations, are planned during 2000.
